Voters have a clear choice in the 28th Congressional District, but there’s no major reason not to return Democratic Rep. Louise Slaughter to the Capitol.

Slaughter is the Democrat and Chronicle’s choice in next month’s general election.

An unapologetic liberal, Slaughter is being challenged for a 13th term by Republican Jill Rowland of Buffalo. Rowland is a dentist who believes government has grown too large and intrusive.

As chairman of the powerful Rules Committee, Slaughter has been a strong supporter of legislation deemed big government by Republicans. She was instrumental, for example, in finding a legislative solution to get ground-breaking health care reform passed. And although she originally pushed for a public option, she was practical enough to support the final bill without it. Slaughter also has taken a keen interest in bringing high-speed rail to the region, and secured $2.5 million to design an intermodal station in Rochester.
