Slaughter Says Obama’s Pro High-Speed Rail Message Will Help Western New York

May 2010

Congresswoman Louise Slaughter (NY-28) said that President Obama’s commitment to high-speed rail was the latest and strongest indication so far that the federal government will invest significant resources into a project that will transform Upstate New York.

“Yesterday I was delighted to hear President Obama tout the benefits of high-speed rail here in New York and across the country. He couldn’t have talked about it in a better place than Upstate New York,” said Slaughter. “The President came to Buffalo to discuss what we’re doing in Washington to create jobs, help small businesses and rebuild our manufacturing sector. All of those priorities will be strengthened when high-speed rail comes to the Empire Corridor. He rightly told us that high-speed rail will create jobs, is good for businesses, good for our environment and a convenient option for New Yorkers.”

During his visit to Buffalo, President Obama was asked about improving America and New York’s transportation. He stressed that high-speed rail is often more convenient than flying, good for businesses and good for our environment.

Slaughter, as the founder of the Upstate Congressional Caucus, is a leader in high-speed rail. Last week Slaughter convened a meeting with Secretary Ray LaHood who pledged his full support to New York. Slaughter also brought LaHood to the Rochester train station to discuss the $151 million New York received in stimulus funds to begin construction along the Empire Corridor.
