Rep. Slaughter Receives George Eastman House Medal of Honor Award

On Monday, June 5, 2006, the George Eastman House presented Congresswoman Louise M. Slaughter with the Medal of Honor Award. Rep. Slaughter was the first recipient of this prestigious award which the Eastman House has created for meritorious service to the advancement of the principles embodied by George Eastman.

In thanking the Eastman House for honoring her, Congresswoman Slaughter said “We need to make people believe in the power of art to educate our citizens and to improve lives in truly unique ways. We can’t allow art to be seen as expendable – either now or in the years ahead. The George Eastman House reminds us every day of how critical art is to our society. And I promise to continue my efforts to bring their message to the halls of Congress.”

Art supporters from Rochester and Buffalo attended the tribute, and Actor Giancarlo Esposito made a special appearance to deliver a moving speech in honor of Rep. Slaughter’s efforts on behalf of the arts and women. Other celebrities, who had been touched by Rep. Slaughter’s efforts to advance the arts, sent congratulatory notes.
