Protecting the Middle Class from an Extreme Republican Budget
Louise strongly opposes the draconian budget cuts proposed by House Republicans and the Tea Party extremists within their ranks. The Republicans' proposed budget, commonly called the "Ryan Plan", would force America's seniors, the poor, and the middle class to bear the brunt of fixing our economy. Among other provisions, the proposed budget would shower tax breaks onto Americans earning over a $1 million a year- tax breaks that total more than $300,000 per millionaire, each year. To pay for this irresponsible scheme, The Ryan budget would end Medicare as we know it, and introduce a voucher system for seniors to purchase their own healthcare. Finally, the plan would fail to close any corporate tax loopholes, and Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan himself estimates that the plan would add $3.1 trillion dollars to the deficit between 2013 and 2022. Finally, the Ryan Budget increases military spending while slashing the safety net for the middle class.
This extreme partisan proposal takes a hatchet to the notion of shared responsibility and places an enormous burden upon seniors, the poor, and the middle class. We’ve tried the “give tax cuts to the rich and everything else will sort itself out” approach before, and it has been a spectacular failure. It is a vision that does not reflect our common values or our common ideals of a better America. Louise believes we can balance our budget in a responsible way. She believes in creating jobs in the high-tech and construction fields, investing in our future by prioritizing education, health and the economy, and reducing the deficit by winding down the war in Afghanistan, making responsible domestic spending cuts and ending tax breaks for millionaires, billionaires and corporations that ship jobs overseas.
