Republican Leadership: Crisis in the Middle East? Ban Gay Marriage

Sunday July 23, 2006

I know I don’t mince words when it comes to speaking out against the actions of the Congressional Republicans in Washington, but this past week was a new low for the failed Republican Leadership in the House of Representatives.

Their actions made it clear how Republicans have no answers at a time of grave international crisis when America and the world needs leadership.

Here were the two lead items in the Republican House agenda considered this past week, at a time when the skies of Middle East were being lit up with missiles and rockets:

*H.J. Res. 88 – Constitutional Amendment to Prohibit Same Sex Marriages: Right wing Republicans failed to pass this amendment, which would amend the Constitution to state that “marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman.” Republicans in the House pushed forward with the bill despite the fact that the Senate already defeated its own version of this amendment earlier in the year, ending any possibility that the amendment will go to the states for ratification this year.

*H.R. 2389 – Pledge Protection Bill: Republicans brought this bill to the House floor that strips federal courts, including the Supreme Court, of the jurisdiction “to hear or decide any question pertaining to the interpretation of, or the validity under the Constitution of, the Pledge of Allegiance, as defined in section 4 of title 4, or its recitation.”

These actions demonstrated once again that, no matter what challenges this nation faces, Republicans will keep going back to the same old Karl Rovian playbook of hateful and divisive politics.

If the American people want a Congress that understands their concerns – about security, the economy, and global instability – and responds to them with meaningful action, then we need a change of leadership in the Congress.

Help us set the record straight so we can get America moving in the right direction again, and ensure that our government is once again working for us. Ask your family and friends to join my campaign today.

This cynical agenda of the Republican Congressional Leadership further exposes how they are abusing their position to gain cheap political points —while costing the American people dearly.

Rising gas prices, a record national debt? Ban gay marriage!

An all out civil war erupting in Iraq and the situation getting out of control by the hour in the Middle East? Protect the Pledge of Allegiance!

This is a failed Republican Congress. They ought to be ashamed of their record of failure.

So please ask your friends to join my campaign so that I can keep up the fight against the cynical Republican Leadership who seems to always put divisive partisan politics over sound public policy.

We need fundamental reform in the United States Congress, and that means a fundamental change in House and Senate leadership.
