Watch C-SPAN and PBS Tomorrow

Tuesday January 17, 2006

  1. Thank you for being a true American. Our nation is in peril
like never before in our history.
Be prepared to avert an interruption from these tricksters.
They probably will make up a new “national threat” or something similar to take the focus off the
democratic party’s demand for accountability and exposure of all
the theft and constitutional violations by this administration.
Press on, the country needs you and is with you.
    God bless,

  3. Representative Slaughter,

Thank you for your blog. I noticed you mentioned the PBS series. I look forward to hearing more.

If you as many others sense things are crazy in America, there’s hope—There’s a way to impeach the President without going through the House Judiciary Commitee.

Yes, it’s true: Impeachment without House Judiciary Committee.

There is a way to remove this rascal—For details on the relevant House rules, I’ve provided a link under my name which and highlights the relevant text: What can be done, how to do it, and which informaiton your legislative director and/or the Congressional Research Service may wish to review before giving a formal opinion.

The key: Remember, the States, Territories, and Members of Congress can bring charges . . . and this doesn’t have to go through the House Judiciary Committee.

If you’re wondering who I am, you can mention, “Constant” to Congressman Conyers.

    Very respectfully,

    Constant

  4. The determination and leadership demonstrated by this initiative is gratifying.

It deserves to become more than another layer of political noise – which can only happen if Democratic lected officials and the DNC discover the science of marketing.

The slogan “Culture of Republican Corruption” is an example of excellent marketing technique and establishes one leg of a campaign strategy.

The proposed package of reforms is a substantial response, but lacks the marketing packaging necessary to be heard through the smoke being blown by the opposition. It has the potential of being an effective second leg.

The vital third leg remains absent – a statement of vision – clearly, concisely and powerfully stated – signifying a Democratic commitment to integrity and accountability in the conduct of public affairs.

Without the application of a sophisticated, contemporary marketing strategic process, this extraordinary opportunity to affect national change will drown in a public skeptism towards political puffery.

The message, as is, plays well with core Democratic constituencies. It fairs far less with independents, disaffected Democrats and moderate Republicans.

Republicans have come to understand and employ the diferences between political and marketing strategies. If we hope to win, so must we.

  5. Please dont give up when going for the throat. Bush has people agreeing with him and they dont even know what hes doing.
Please stress how he is snubbing his nose at the constitution and thinking he is a king and can do anything he wants. WAKE THESE PEOPLE UP. i WILL BE CONTACTING MANY OF MY FRIENDS AND CO-WORKERS TO TELL THEM TO WATCH. Please dont let us down.
Thank you and fight a damn good fight,
    good luck,

  7. 1. Of what legal authority is “Jefferson’s Manual” as compares with actual rulings on the question of impeachment?

    2. Have those who’ve come up with the impeachment “theory” any background in actual law, instead of resorting to secondary materials such as the “Manual” and English common law? (In a conflict of laws between US/state law, and English common law, which would control?)

    3. The above are important questions, in view of the amount of extemporaneous “legal” theorizing that goes on on the Internet by and among those who imagine themselves clever on political grounds, and to view law and politics as essentailly identical in substance and application.

    4. Anything can be done in theory, barring politics. But not everything can be done in law. Have you a state or territorial legislature in mind which will go along with your theory? The answer to that question is obvious: No.

    5. The Democratic ethical accountability effort is core, and needs the cut-through-the-BS marketing indicated. But ultimately, based thereon, one has momentum—or not. All the rest remains theory with unanswered quetions about relevance and legal authority of the underlying “principles” as contrasted with actual law. It isn’t only about those, and rules; it is also—above those—about established legal precdent, which trump principles and rules.

    6. Pressing Gore’s allegations is essentail: he has focused like a lazer, zeroed in on issue and language, as is shown by the increasing attacks on him, and the speciaou Carter-Clinton allegation. Blow the latter out of the water and the obscurantism is gone.

  9. Thank you Rep. Slaughter,

For both the work you do and the email heads up. I’d like to see more of these heads’ up ahead of time
coordinated by all our leadership. We in the grassroots can help build support and get more media coverage these events if we know ahead of time when and where we can point people to. Please suggest this to Rep. Pelosi and Sen. Reid if you can. I look forward to watching.
    Thanks.

  10. Wouldn’t publicly financed elections go a long way to reducing the corruption in politics? Some states are already doing this, namely Arizona and some others. It seems to me this would take the corporate money out of the equation and make the politicians more responsive to their constituants. Haven’t we had enough of corporations writing our laws?

Isn’t this a no brainer, like universal healthcare?
The American people want these things, so why can’t we have them?
    John levin    Jan 18, 12:16 PM    #
  11. Please point out Bush’s deeply rooted affiliation with Exxon and the Exxon memo that dictated Bush’s stance on KYOTO and his energy policies. For that alone, Bush should be indicted, not to mention his contributions from the pharmaceutical industry and his resulting Health Care legislation which heavily benefits the pharmaceutical companies.

  12. Good. It is about time that we aggressively push pack, and shall I say, raise hell about Republican Corruption and unconstitutional behavior.

Rep. Slaughter, please implore senators to filibuster Judge Alito. The very first decision of the Roberts Court showed the bloc voting of the three most radical right justices, Roberts, Scalia and Thomas on social and moral legislation. To add Alito to this bloc GUARANTEES four justices will ALWAYS side with the immoral and illegal Bush Administration.

Filibuster is what must happen. Please request that your colleagues in the Senate do what is right for America and filibuster Alito.
    Ohiodem1    Jan 18, 03:05 PM    #
  13. Woot!! Give ‘em hell Rep Slaughter!! You did us proud today and we’re behind you 100%! Thank you!

I also support Ohiodem1’s statement above ^. If Alito is confirmed to the SCOTUS, I fear it will be the final nail in the coffin that puts our Constitution to rest.

  14. Wow what a speech!!! I loved the comment about ’ nothing is too precious for this administration to sell’ and the intelligence level of those in power!! Thank you for fighting the fight for those of us who feel powerless. How could they expect Americans in nursing homes to wade through the confusing mess of the medicare prescription plans is beyond me…..obviously they didn’t care!!
Thank you again, from a fellow Kentuckian.
    Holly    Jan 18, 03:47 PM    #
  15. Your speech was perfect. The statement you made about “being too corrupt to sustain itself any longer” is absolutely right. So my question is, how can any Democrat vote YES to Alito? You all need to VOTE NO TO ALITO if you want to protect our Constitution. Your constituents are so afraid you will all fall down on this issue. He has an agenda that will corrupt even more. Please, FILIBUSTER! This is your opportunity to stand together again, for the good of our Country!
    KayCeSF    Jan 18, 03:53 PM    #
  16. Great speech. Please keep fighting. And please lobby the Senate to vote against Alito and do a filabuster if necessary. Thanks.’

  17. Great speech and great ideas. Thanks so much for the good work and making things so clear.

The K Street coruption must end. We need to stop corporations from writing legislation just for business. This nation is about WE the people. In the end legislation that is good for us is good for them too. But the primary goal is to protect the people which Republicans are not doing at this time.

I only wish this event was broadcasted on all the major media networks..

I guess it is our part to get out the word on the good work WE Democrats are doing.

I say WE because it is time we start including ourselves in OUR party and thank those who WE have elected to represent all of us.
    Bruce    Jan 18, 04:03 PM    #
  18. Just watched the presentation by the Democratic Party on C-Span.

    Hip Hip !!!

Stay on track. Keep at them. Have you noticed that they will confess to a questionable or illegal act, then just as things are getting hot they will confess to another and divert attention away to the new confession leaving action on the previous confession hanging in the air. That way they never have to answer for anthing. Attention Deficit Disorder to the nth degree. So … stay focused.

We can get this country back on track.
    Wilma    Jan 18, 04:15 PM    #
  19. What a fiery, dynamic, intelligent, and truthful speech. I sure would enjoy voting you into the office of the President of the U. S. in another decade or so.
    Cristi    Jan 18, 04:17 PM    #
  20. Excellent speach except for one item missed. The paper trail when voting. Diebold voting machines have been fixed, and this should have been mentioned.

All lobbiest activities should be outlawed. A goverment of the people, by & for the people. No lobbiests allowed.
    Allen    Jan 18, 04:28 PM    #
  21. The speeches were good but I think the Republicans beat you to it by a day with Hastert and Drier. You got no coverage other that c-span and the quality was not good. Too many people on the stage and no one knew what to do next. I love all of you but you looked like a mob leaving the stage. Too many people, nothing in order. cspan was quick to get to Lotts speech.
    Madelyn    Jan 18, 04:29 PM    #
  22. Thank you for the hard work Congresswoman Slaughter.

If Alito is confirmed, with his belief in the Unitary Executive theory, presidential signing statements are on the way to becoming legal documentation for judicial interpretation of written law.

On this reason alone, Alito must be filibustered.

To help organize Congresswoman Slaughter’s “regulars” to join in this effort, stop by the Stop Alito Challenge and register a team. It’s easy and a little competition makes it fun. The mission is clear and “Team ConyersBlog” is issuing the challenge to all blogs. All senators official mailboxes can be linked from the site.

  23. Rep. Slaughter, You were wonderful!! We are sick of being thrown in a corner and forgotten. We need loud and clear messages. Keep speaking up for us and tell the other constituents to do the same. Thank you!

  25. You were wonderful, Louise. I was so pleased that you received sustained applause. Believe me, you held your own with all the better known senators and representatives. I was very proud of you. Better still, I am proud that action is being taken to introduce legislation that will curb the abuses. And we should never forget that it is Bush and Cheney who have set the tone for this state of affairs, by misleading the American people in so many areas and dealing in secret with a privileged few. Unfortunately, it appears our nation is in decline and Bush has taken us a quantum step downward.

Remember when Bill Nojay kept referring to several of us who opposed his “smoke and mirrors” bus terminal as lackeys of Louise Slaughter. Well, I am proud to be considered one of your lackeys. KEEP UP THE GOOD FIGHT.

    Your friend,

    Doug Midkiff

  26. Rep. Slaughter, you were excellent today, deserving of the sustained applause for the fire and outrage expressed in every word. I agree with much of what is said above including Diebold issues, Exxon and especially the marketing of the Democratic message. This is absolutely essential; for every Dem on TV we see 3 Republicans or apologists. This has to change ASAP.

But more than any of that, you must aggressively oppose Alito for SCOTUS if you want to save our country and our constitution. He and the Bush Administration will send us into the Dark ages in a year and we will lose so many of our cherished freedoms. You must do this for the little guy and especially for women and families. This is job one, then the Abramoff Investigation. Don’t let up on them Louise, you know how dirty they are. Please save our country from this unmitigated disaster.

  28. We have some things to learn from this administration’s diversionary tactics, including the ability to boldly and overtly behave as it pleases.

    1. Americans want a strong leader.
In every poll, bush is rated stronger than his dem opponents. That perception stems, in part, from taking bold—no matter how inappropriate—actions. That translates as strength to many. As long as thumbing your nose looks like strength, the dems have to respond with strength: strong, strident, morally outraged, in-your-face approaches. I believe the populace would respond to something that might look like a REAL catfight.

    2. We can force the administration to focus.
When this administration needs to use diversion, it is time for us, via our representatives, to focus. The more this administration doesn’t want to provide answers, the harder we should ask. And not stop. A new diversion? Add those questions to the list.

And I don’t plan to get unhinged if Alito sails through. Unhappy, yes, but more and more people are paying attention to the antics of this administration. More people are speaking out in opposition. They need folks like us to hang tough.

  30. The needed Congessional reforms are obvious:
    (1) Term Timits
    (2) Campaign Finance reform
When you place the good of the country ahead of your political career, then I will believe that you are genuinely interested in cleaning up the corruption, cronyism, nepotism and incompetence that runs rampant throughout Congress.

  31. I caught your speech yesterday at the Library of Congress and it was wonderful!! I am so glad some of you democrats are finally coming out and slamming the great dictator wannebe and the corrupt republicans in the house and senate!! I am sixty five years old and have never seen anything like it!! This bunch of republicans make Nixon and his thugs look like choir boys!! Its simply terrible what they are doing to our great country! All of them should be impeached and put on trial for their lying and war crimes!! Thank you very much and keep up the good work. PS. We have some democrats that are a disgrace to their party and should be voted out of office too and I think you know who they are.

  32. Just saw you on C-Span today (Thursday) and want to say you are a great gift to the Congress. Thank you for standing up for the people who need you most. Please also bring up the insurgence of the Christian Right into the government – I am reading “God is on their Side” by Easter Kaplan – and how this country – if the Fundamentalist aren’t stopped – is headed for a Theocracy with King George. This is more than frigthening – it is the end of Democracy itself.

  33. We watched you on c-Span yesterday and this morning. We are proud that you are in the forefront of this reform movement to restore honesty and openness to our democracy. You are knowledgeable and articulate. Your use of humor injects a balance of humanness that connects well to the people.
This morning you answered both positive and negative questions clearly and factually with a gentle but firm grace. It is legislators of your stature that will help restore respect for the democracy of the United States.
You have our continued support and friendship.

I also heard you this morning on CSpan, and once again, kudos for your insight and comments, for your honesty and integrity. Keep up the wonderful work. Go after the corruption. Change our government for the people, by the people and of the people! Go get ‘em! Martha

  35. I’m originally from Blauvelt, NY in Rockland County, but have been living in Austin, TX for the past 20 years. We’ve had to experience the pain and agony of a Bush governorship as well as his presidency. After watching your speech on CSPAN yesterday, I was so impressed with your ideas and ability to communicate them-as well as your energythat I’m convinced you need to be at the forefront of the Democratic Party resurgence and battle to restore ethics in government. You are a wonderful national resource that has been hidden from us down in Texas-you need to get out much more! Come down to Austin and speak to the faithful here! We’re like “Fort Apache” surrounded by all the right-wing Bush crazies in the Lone Star State. Rick Perry is an embarassment, we’ve been abused by Tom DeLay in redistricting our voting power. We need you, Louise! Thanks for a wonderful speech on CSPAN and taking a leadership role in the fight against Republican corruption and incompentence! I’ll be the first to say it…Louise Slaughter is Vice Presidential material for the national ticket in ‘08!
